Ruby & Becky (Brekke)

From one dog to two, read how love found its way— twice!

For years, Wayne had carried a quiet dream: to adopt senior dogs from shelters, giving them a loving home in their golden years. When the time finally felt right, he began searching adoption sites, hoping to find a soul to save. That’s when he stumbled upon Ruby.

“She wasn’t a senior,” Wayne admits, “but she looked like a blast.” Captivated, he watched her “Catch My Clip” video and was completely smitten. Something about her spirit just stuck with him. Without hesitation, he planned a trip to SNIPSA, fingers crossed that they’d get to meet.

The moment Wayne stepped through the door, Ruby was the first to greet him—tail wagging, eyes bright. “It was love at first sight,” he recalls. At 70 years old, it was Wayne’s first time experiencing such an instant connection. “She’s a sweetheart at home,” he says. “My biggest requirement was her temperament around my grandchildren, but she exceeded my expectations! If they’re ever in distress, she’s the first one by their side!”

As time went on, Wayne felt Ruby would benefit from a companion—someone to match her energy and keep her company. He began fostering dogs to find her the perfect playmate, but none quite fit. Then came an adoption event at Woof Gang Bakery, where he brought Ruby along to let her make the decision. After meeting several dogs, Ruby suddenly stopped in her tracks. In front of her stood Brekke. Ruby playfully bowed, tail high and wiggling—her silent but unmistakable seal of approval.

Wayne watched the interaction with hope, but soon a potential adopter arrived for Brekke, someone who had already submitted an application. Disappointed, he prepared to say goodbye. But as fate would have it, the adoption fell through. Wayne didn’t waste a moment—he knew this was his chance! He scooped her up and never looked back.

Now named Becky, she and Ruby are inseparable. “I couldn’t have lucked out more,” Wayne says. “They are the perfect addition to my family, and they’re so loved by everyone.”

What started as a mission to rescue turned into something much greater—a reminder that sometimes, the ones we set out to save end up saving us.
